Split-Dalmatia County

Split-Dalmatia County is the central-southern Dalmatian county in Croatia. Its center is Split. The most important economic activity is tourism. Manufacturing and agriculture are in decline. The county is linked to the rest of Croatia by the newly built four-lane Split-Zadar-Karlovac-Zagreb highway and the Lika railway. Split-Kaštela international airport is used mostly by tourist charter flights in the summer. There is also a smaller paved airfield on the island of Brač. On the islands, settlements are smaller due to high emigration, but mostly urban in character. Among them are Supetar (3,000) on the island of Brač, Hvar (3,700) and Stari Grad (1,900) on Hvar and Vis (1,800) and Komiža (1,500) on Vis. Split is the largest town in Dalmatia. It is the cultural, economic and traffic centre. It developed from the Diocletian place that was constructed in the 3rd century AD. This is the largest and best preserved late-antique palace in the world. The Diocletian place was listed in 1979 in the UNESCO register of monuments with international significance In addition, there are many exceptional buildings here, e.g. the cathedral of St. Dujo which is the oldest in the world, the cathedral of St. Dominic, the late gothic town hall, several monasteries, the old cemetery from the 10th century and others. Towering above the town is the hill and park of Marjan.
