A long time ago, the inhabitants of Brela established their existence by raising grapevines and the renowned “Maraska” cherry on the steep terrace-like land. With the development of tourism, the interest for agriculture decreased and in 1935 a society was established for making Brela more beautiful. But the thousand year old agriculture was preserved in numerous gardens and property on which the present inhabitants of Brela raise basically olives, grapevines, oranges and lemons. There is a construction preserved from the time of the Illyrians over the village of Škrabići along with several piles of ceramic, old pottery, excerpts of tombstones and money from the Roman era in Soline. The small church which was dedicated to the Lady of Karmela was built in 1730. On the Biokovo mountain over Brela is the Hercegova fortress.
